Our chickens

All our Chickens live in groups of between 200 and 250.  The chickens are able to roam around the field searching for worms, insects, grain and grass.  We also feed them ground up seashells, which makes their egg shells strong.  They like to lay their eggs in a dark private area, so their houses have been built specifically to make the chickens feel happy and comfortable.  They come to live in these houses once they are 19 weeks old.  We don't hatch our own chickens, they are imported  from France.

There is one person who looks after all our chickens, with one other person helping him.  Between them they open up their houses every morning and collect the eggs. Every night the chickens are locked away in their houses to protect them from the foxes. The houses are moved to a fresh patch of ground once a week.

We keep two types of chickens for producing eggs.

Copper and Black Marans.
Their egg shells are brown.

Leghorns.
Their egg shells are white.

The other chickens we keep on our farm are called Naked Necks, which are bred for meat.
