Bees

All about Bees

A Bee HiveBees are an insect with four wings.  They are small, about 2mm to 4cm long.  They  feed on flowers and are very important as they help pollinate the crops.  We keep honeybees in the orchard next to the walled garden where they live in their homes, which are called hives.   A small hive can contain about 20,000 bees.

There are three different types of bee that live in the hive.

Queen Bee

There is only one Queen Bee in a hive.  She produces all the babies.  She can produce 1,500 eggs per day.

Drones
These are male bees. They lead a life of leisure, doing no work while being fed by the workers.  Their sole purpose is to mate with a queen bee.

Worker Bees
These are female but do not breed.  They collect pollen and nectar from flowers and take it to the bee hive. Bees turn the nectar into honey by regurgitating the nectar into the honeycombe.  Regurgiating means bringing back the food from the stomach.

To make a tablespoon of honey a Worker Bee has to visit over 4,000 flowers.  That's a lot of flowers!

Did you know that.........?

The bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.

Hot honey and lemon is the ideal drink if you have a cold.

Romans used honey instead of gold to pay their taxes.

Bees' wings beat 11,400 times per minute.
