Organic Pigs

At Laverstoke Farm we have 4 breeds of pigs.  They don't live in a sty but an Ark.  These are special outdoor houses which we can move around.  The piglets are born in the Arks and when they are eight weeks old they are weaned.  The pigs roam in the fields and there are approximately  seven pigs to one acre.

Pigs normally have two litters per year.  Each piglet has it's own favourite teat.  The bigger piglets get the teats that have the most milk.  The smallest piglets are called 'runts' they never grow as well as the larger pigs because they get the last milk. Their bigger brothers and sisters push them out of the way and get the most.  They spend part of their lives in the woods, where they enjoy snuffling around for treats, and part of their lives in the fields, where they enjoy eating grass just as much as cows and sheep.  Pigs can live for as long as 12 years.
