Organic Chicken
Frequently Asked Questions
1) What breeds do we keep?
We have two breeds:
The black birds are French Marans - they lay approximately 220-250 eggs each per year and the eggs are dark brown in colour.
The hybrid Lohmann are commercial layers, laying approximately 300-310 eggs each per year and their eggs are ‘normal egg colour’.
2) How often are the houses moved?
The houses are moved once a week to ensure fresh grass is available.
3) How many chickens are there per house?
One house holds 80 French Marans, the other holds 200 Lohmann.
4) Are the houses shut up at night?
Yes, the houses are shut up at night to keep the chickens safe from foxes.
5) What do they eat?
All birds are fed oyster grit (full of calcium, so good for the egg shells) and flint grit (keeps their digestive systems healthy). They are fed once a day and the hoppers are always filled up outside, to encourage them to stay outside. The chickens also eat grass and insects. Worms are particularly good for them, as they’re full of protein.
6) How many hours of daylight do they receive each day?
We aim to ensure they always have 14 hours of daylight per day. To ensure this is still possible during the darker months, we have daylight bulbs in their houses.
