Wild Boar
We have 29 sows, 3 boars and anticipate 116 boarlets in the next 3 months. Our wild boar herd is based on animals of Polish descent. They have a good shape for meat production and a good temperament. We are crossing the boar with some of our raditional pig breeds to produce special quality, slow growing natural meat. Our boars have their own wooded area where they can enjoy expressing their natural behaviour. They will produce upwards of four boarlets each, per year. Wild Boars are subject to the Dangerous Animals Act, we have been granted a licence to keep them by construction this purpose build breeding facility.
Our 51 pigs are based in arks and occupy approximately seven acres. This gives a density of approximately seven pigs per acre. Piglets are born/housed in pig arks. They are weaned at approximately eight weeks.
Our 117 wild boar are housed in arks and occupy approximately five acres. This gives a density of approximately 23 boar per acre. Boarlets are born/housed in arks. They are weaned at approximately 12 weeks.
Pigs normally have two litters per year. Each piglet has its own favourite teat. The bigger piglets get the teats that vive the most milk. The smallest piglets are called 'runts' they never grow as well as the larger pigs because they get the last milk. Their bigger brothers and sisters push them out of the way and get the most. All of our pigs live in special outdoor houses, which we more around. They spend part of their lives in the woods, where they enjoy snuffling around for treats, and part of their lives in the fields, where they enjoy eating grass just as much as cows and sheep. Pigs can live for as long as twelve years.
