Work Experience

DAIRY BUFFALO WORK EXPERIENCE:

BOOK NOW FOR 2018 –  MOST WEEKS THIS YEAR ARE ALREADY RESERVED!

We initially offer one week (Monday to Friday) at our buffalo dairy to university students and pupils aged 17 and above who are aiming for a career in agriculture or veterinary science. We can only take one student at a time, working 8:00am – 5:00pm on three days and 5:00am – 5:00pm on two days to help with the morning milking.

This is not a suitable placement for students who are very quiet or easily offended. Applicants must be confident, lively and hard-working and be prepared to ask questions and learn from the dairymen. A character reference from a tutor or proof of vet school attendance is required.

Before a buffalo placement is confirmed, students must attend one of our informal group interviews and sign our risk assessment, medical form and behaviour contract. Students under 18 must be accompanied at interview by a parent, who must counter-sign the paperwork.

N.B. We regret that we cannot offer sheep, cattle, pig or poultry work placements. We do not offer any longer-term or paid animal work experience, weekend work, internships to foreign students or free accommodation.

ABATTOIR NOW CLOSED

Sadly, our on-site abattoir is currently non-operational. Therefore, we are no longer able to offer viewings of humane slaughter from the gallery or the opportunity for students to shadow a vet inside.

HORTICULTURAL WORK EXPERIENCE – NO LONGER AVAILABLE:

Our walled garden and orchard are no longer managed by biodynamic experts and we cannot accept any students for work experience.

Since 2009, almost 300 students have benefited from a short-term work experience placement on our farm.
